Phra Mae Thorani is the goddess of the Earth, the deity who gives birth to, nourishes, and sustains humanity throughout all ages. She embodies patience, steadfastness, and generosity, ready to provide resources for the world to continue.
In Thai tradition, Phra Mae Thorani prominently appears in the legend of Squeezing Her Hair (Bīp Mūai Phǒm), which occurred when the Buddha defeated Mara (the demon-king). The Goddess wrung her hair, causing a torrent of sacred water—a witness to the Buddha’s accumulated virtues—to flow out, washing away obstacles and defilements, leading to Mara’s defeat.
People worship Phra Mae Thorani to ask for stability, abundance, protection from harm, and the purification of negativity in life. She is the sacred ground that embraces the entire world and the power that teaches humanity to stand firm in all circumstances.
