พญามาร คือ พญาวสวัตตีมาร หรือ ท้าวปรนิมมิตวสวัตตี ซึ่งเป็นหัวหน้าของเหล่ามารในพุทธศาสนา มีหน้าที่ขัดขวางไม่ให้พระพุทธเจ้าตรัสรู้และนำพาสัตว์โลกข้ามพ้นวัฏสงสาร โดยพญามารได้ยกทัพมารมาผจญพระพุทธเจ้า แต่ก็ต้องพ่ายแพ้ต่อพระบารมีของพระองค์ในที่สุด พญามารเป็นตัวแทนของกิเลสที่ขัดขวางการบรรลุธรรม และสัญลักษณ์ของความชั่วร้ายที่ต้องเอาชนะ
Phya MaraPhya Mara (or Vassavatti Mara / Paranimmita-vasavatti Mara) is the chief of the Mara spirits in Buddhism. His duty is to obstruct the Buddha from attaining enlightenment and preventing sentient beings from crossing the cycle of suffering (Samsara). Mara led his army to challenge the Buddha but was ultimately defeated by the Buddha’s accumulated virtues and merit. Phya Mara represents the defilements (Kilesa) that impede spiritual attainment and is the symbol of evil that must be overcome.
