ฤๅษีระ-นารายณ์ เป็นฤๅษีฝาแฝด ที่เป็นอวตารของพระวิษณุ พระฤๅษีบำเพ็ญตบะในป่าเป็นเวลาหลายปี ทำให้ตบะแก่กล้ามากขึ้น อินทรเทพ เกรงว่าฤๅษีตบะจะแกร่งเกิน กลัวมาแย่งบัลลังก์บนสวรรค์ จึงมาก่อกวน ทำลายตบะ แต่ฤๅษีนารายณ์ก็ไม่ได้สนใจ ท้ายสุดฤๅษีนารายณ์ลูบต้นขา เกิดนางอัปสรนามว่า อุรวศี อุรวศี ที่งามกว่าอัปสรใดและอัปสรให้อีก ๑๖,๐๐๐ ตน ให้พระอินทร์ พระอินทร์ก็ไม่มาวุ่นวายอีก ในทวาปรยุคฤๅษีนารายณ์มาเกิดเป็น พระกฤษณะ ฤๅษีระ มาเกิดเป็น อรชุน

Rishi NarayanaRishi Nara-Narayana are a pair of twin sages who are avatars of Lord Vishnu. The Rishis performed severe Tapas (austerities) in the forest for many years, causing their spiritual power to grow intensely. Indra, the king of the gods, feared that their spiritual power would become too great and that they might usurp his celestial throne. Thus, Indra tried to cause trouble and destroy their penance, but the Nara-Narayana Rishis paid him no mind. Finally, Rishi Narayana stroked his thigh and created the Apsara named Urvashi—who was more beautiful than any other Apsara—and 16,000 other Apsaras as an offering to Indra. After receiving this gift, Indra stopped bothering them. In the Dvapara Yuga era, Rishi Narayana was born as Lord Krishna, and Rishi Nara was born as Arjuna.
