อวตารแรกของพระนารายณ์ พระองค์ปรากฏกายเป็นปลาต่อพระมนูเพื่อเตือนเรื่องมหาอุทกภัย พร้อมสั่งให้สร้างเรือสำหรับกอบกู้ชีวิตและสรรพสิ่งสำคัญ มัตสยะยังช่วยกอบกู้คัมภีร์พระเวทที่ถูกอสูรหัยครีพขโมยลงสู่บาดาล อวตารนี้แทนการช่วยเหลือและนำทางคนดีให้รอดพ้นอันตราย

Matsya AvatarThe first avatar of Lord Narayana (Vishnu). He appeared as a fish to warn King Manu about the Great Flood (Maha-Pralaya) and commanded him to build a ship to save all life and essential creation. Matsya also helped retrieve the Vedas which were stolen and taken to the underworld by the demon Hayagriva. This avatar represents the act of salvation and guidance for the virtuous to escape danger.
