มหาวิษณุ คือ สภาวะที่ยิ่งใหญ่สูงสุด ของพระวิษณุหรือพระนารายณ์ ในคัมภีร์วิษณุปุราณะของไวษณพนิกาย (ที่ถือพระวิษณุเป็นใหญ่) มหาวิษณุ คือ จุดเริ่มต้นและจุดสิ้นสุด เป็นต้นกำเนิดของทุกสรรพสิ่ง เป็นปฐมพรหม เป็นปรมาตมัน ของพระวิษณุ มหาวิษณุ คือ ความจริงอันสมบูรณ์ การสร้างสรรค์ ปกป้องให้ดำรงอยู่ จนถึงจุดสิ้นสุด เทพเจ้าอื่น ๆ ล้วนถือเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของพระองค์ มหาวิษณุประทับอยู่ยืนบนพญาอนันตนาคราช เป็นตัวแทนของเวลาและจักรวาล ที่ไม่มีจุดเริ่มต้นและจุดจบ และจะยังคงอยู่แม้ว่าทุกสิ่งในจักรวาลจะถูกทำลายไปแล้วก็ตาม

Maha VishnuMaha Vishnu is the supreme, greatest state of Lord Vishnu or Narayana. In the Vishnu Purana of the Vaishnava sect (which regards Vishnu as supreme), Maha Vishnu is the beginning and the end, the source of all existence, the Primordial Brahma, and the Paramatman (Supreme Self) of Vishnu. Maha Vishnu embodies absolute truth, creation, preservation, and dissolution. All other deities are considered a part of Him. Maha Vishnu rests upon the great serpent Ananta-Shesha, which represents time and the universe, having no beginning and no end, and which remains even after all things in the cosmos are destroyed.
